IMCA is an advocacy service for people who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves. 

An IMCA is commissioned when consideration is being given to a change of accommodation or a serious medical decision has to be made and the client / patient does not have family or friends to participate in the decision making process on their behalf. 

The only other time that an IMCA may be commissioned is when there is someone who wants to be involved on behalf of that person but there are safeguarding issues. 

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard (DoLS)

If a service provider is seeking to deprive someone of their liberty then they must seek an authorisation to do so and an advocate who is DoLS trained will be commissioned.  There are currently 7 practicing Independent Mental Capacity Advocates in Wirral, 6 of whom have DoLS training.

Advocacy in Wirral have a number of staff who are trained to provide IMCA advocacy.  Wired is the lead organisation in the provision of the IMCA and DoLS service in Wirral, and requests for an IMCA or DoLS advocate should be made via them.
